Experimental Evaluation of the Recovery Strategies of a Distributed VoD Application

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2000
abstract:
This paper is focused on the evaluation of the recovery mechanism of a Video on Demand (VoD) system. The system supports recovery of transmission from a server to a client, that is to be per formed; i) within predefined time constraints, and ii) with minimum impact on services delivered to other clients. Due to these constraints, developing effective recovery mechanism is not a simple task, The objective of this study is to quantify the effectiveness of the recovery procedures - in terms of the percentage of successfully recovered transmissions - under varying load conditions and time requirements. The evaluation is done via simulated fault-injection, i.e. by simulating the behavior of the system while faults are injected to tis individual components. More precisely, we evaluated the capability of the system to provide the user wit an alternative Universal Resource Locator(URL) in case of transient failures of individual components.
