Abstract:
This paper presents an overview of problems and achievements in the application of High Performance Computing (HPC) to geographical data processing over the last ten years. It is pointed out the importance of Geography and its impact on the human and social evolution. It is shown that HPC is a suitable and necessary technology to handle demanding problems that arise in the geographical domain. Emerging problems, that may represent a research agenda for the next future, are also outlined.
