Cermets are composites made by a ceramic and a metallic phase. They are mainly used as cutting tools. The ceramic phase is responsible for hardness and wear resistance, while the metallic phase for toughness and thermal shock resistance. Among cermets, titanium carbonitrides Ti(C, N) are gaining an ever increasing technological interest.
