Abstract:
Wepresentananalyticalandnumericalstudyoftheinteractionofamulti-petawatt,pancake-shaped
laser pulsewithanunmagnetizedplasma.Thestudyhasbeenperformedintheultrarelativisticregimeof
electron jittervelocities,inwhichtheplasmaelectronsarealmostcompletelyexpelledfromthepulse
region. Thecalculationsareappliedtoalaserwake field accelerationschemewithspecifications that
may beavailableinthenextgenerationofTi:Salasersandwiththeuseofrecentlydevelopedpulse
compression techniques.Asetofnovelnonlinearequationsisderivedusingathree-timescaledescrip-
tion, withanintermediatetimescaleassociatedwiththenonlinearphaseoftheelectromagneticwave
and withthespatialbendingofitswavefront.Theydescribe,onanequalfooting,boththestrongandthe
moderatelaserintensityregimes,pertinenttothecoreandtotheedgesofthepulse.
