Ultrafast photo-physical phenomena peculiar for conjugated carbon chains are investigated by using pump-probe, pump-push-probe and opto-electronic probing techniques. An overall picture of the electronic structure and hierarchy of phenomena is deduced. © 2002 Optical Society of America.
