La Morte bianca, gli inverni della Grande guerra nei documenti ufficiali

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2018
abstract:
THE WHITE DEATH The winters of First World War in the official documents. Talking about the Great War conjures up images of opposing armies, deployed men against each other along the front line, battles and fights with huge losses on both sides. In the course of the conflict, however, in addition to the losses in combat and diseases there was another way of dying: to be a victim of avalanches. In the four years of war, 1915-1916 and 1916-1917 winters were characterized by abundant snowfall and particularly rigid temperatures. The troops deployed in the mountains, at altitudes that reached 3905 m a.s.l. of Ortles remained exposed to these very harsh weather conditions with only one concern to survive. Of these long tiring and mournful months passed numerous quotes in the mountains appear in Italian official documents and Austro-Hungarians.
