Abstract:
The reversed field pinch (RFP) is a highly-sheared nearly force-free magnetic field configuration, which is almost entirely self-generated, via a dynamo process. A still open question is the level of turbulence entailed by the dynamo and how it could be mitigated in order to improve plasma confinement. The paper addresses the issue, first discussing the properties of the magnetic profiles of RFX in relation to other RFPs, then analysing some transient enhanced confinement modes which suggest that the improved confinement is due to a reduced dynamo action.
