abstract:
The number and size of sovereign states across the world has varied substantially over time. The purpose of this article is to offer a relatively comprehensive theory to explain the variation in number and size of states, blending standard explanations of international politics, which emphasize war and systemic factors, and domestic political factors, such as military might or the role of democracy and national sentiments.
