abstract:
The paper describes the first part of a study regarding the definition of the dismissed quarries which mainly
impact on the landscape and of those which, in case, can be reactivated. The study is one of the targets of the PRAE
(Regional Plan for the Extractive Activities) of the Umbria Region. The first part of the research deals with the creation of
some vector maps representing the perimeters of the dismissed quarries and the creation of the database of the attributes. By
means of the analysis of many territorial data (geological maps, DTMs, orthorectified aerial photographs, etc.) it was
possible to join, by means of database tables, a lot of informations to each quarry (dimension, topographic area, land use,
visual impact, amount of excavated material, etc.). These attributes have been subsequently used to calculate three indices
of impact, reactivation and recovery. The study has been carried out on a GNU-Linux workstation by means of free
software (Grass GIS, PostgreSQL, Psql, PgAccess, Latex, R, OpenOffice), which have demonstrated to be a powerful and
useful resource not only in the field of the research but also in the landscape management.
