Numerical and experimental analysis of the flow field around a surface combatant ship

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2011
abstract:
In this paper an analysis of the flow field around a surface combatant ship is carried out. The test case considered is the flow around a model of the US naval combatant DDG51; three different speeds of advance are analyzed, corresponding to Fr=0.28, 0.35 and 0.41, with Reynolds numbers equal to 1.200 107, 1.499 107 and 1.756 107 respectively, the scale of the model being Lambda=28.83. Numerical simulations have been carried out by means of the unsteady Reynolds-Averaged Navier-Stokes equations solver ?navis, developed at CNR-INSEAN. The computations are conducted on a sequence of grids in order to perform an accurate analysis of the grid convergence property of the solver. Validation of the results are provided by comparisons with experimental data.
