Abstract:
he transformations occurring in urban settlements on the Italian territory are one of the most significant aspects concerning the transition from Antiquity to Middle Ages, due to the rich and articulated urban tradition of the roman Peninsula. From this
perspective we can observe slow and gradual changes and sudden transitions between the cultural and settlements patterns
of ancient cities and the late antique and early medieval towns. The contribution of recent archaeological researches has
been focused on urban archaeology, and has revised many aspects of this important period of transition using new methods
and perspectives. Within the framework of these studies, we dealed with an analysis of the archaeological potential of Matera,
aimed to identify the settlement mode from the early stages to the medieval town. The case of Matera has shown that
the settlement has been developed over a long span of time defining technical solutions, living practices, therefore civilizations, that are directly linked with the first human experiences
