Abstract:
A mechanized system was applied to the thinnig of a transitional beech forest on steep terrain: rees were motormanually cut with chainsaws and yarded to a landin with a mobile tower yarder stationed at the forest road. Woole trees were stacked in massive bunches under the road cut with a tracked excavator, to build adequate buffers. later on, trees were processed with a dedicated harvester, to produce 2-m firewood logs. using this system, beech thinning operations can generate a profit of up to 2000 euro/ha.
