An isosurfacing algorithm for application to free surface flows

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2011
abstract:
The present paper deals with a numerical method for the location and discretization of the isosurface obtained from the trilinear interpolation of a function in a cubic cell. The method is developed for applications to the context of fluid dynamic modelling of two-phase flows with interface capturing techniques. The algorithm is taken from the field of scientific visualization. Here th19-21 October 2011e key aspects of the implementation are discussed, with attention focused on the strategies adopted to achieve a fast and robust solution procedure. The method is mainly aimed at providing a topologically correct description of the interface, within the trilinear representation, by using the minimum number of triangles in each cell. Some variations with respect to the original algorithm are proposed which improve the volume conservation properties to a certain amount. The method is applied to some basic shapes, and results are presented in terms of number of interface triangles, volume errors and execution times.
