This opinion paper discusses differente hypotheses regarding the formation of "fairy circles", vegetation-free discs that cover vast areas along the pro-Namib Desert. It discusses in particular the hypothesis that fairy circles are self-organized vegetation patterns and compares it with other explanations given in the literature.
