Chapter
Publication Date:

abstract:
The area of the Bay of Naples measuring 870 sq km. The coastline, including the sub units of the Gulf of Pozzuoli, stretches for some 200 km. Twenty-four are the municipalities, including those islands, which cover the entire coastal perimeter. There are two regional basin authorities concerned: the North Western and the Sarno. One is the mountain community, known as "Sorrentine Peninsula", which is involved in the management of the metropolitan area. There are nine protected areas, identified under the law, who are part: The marine protected area "Neptune's kingdom", the Regional Natural Park of the "Campi Flegrei", the two submerged Parks of Baia and Gaiola, the Metropolitan Park "Colline di Napoli", the Vesuvius national Park, regional Park of the river basin "Sarno", the regional Park of the "Monti Lattari", the state marine reserve "Punta Campanella". The network of European interest "Nature 2000", belong twenty-six "Sites of Community Importance" (Sic) and nine "Special Protection Areas". Along the entire band, with few discontinuities, it relaxes the coastal part of the metropolitan area of Naples, the city's largest sea in Italy. In this area also they insist two UNESCO sites. The minimum population size of the Naples metropolitan exceed 3,000,000 inhabitants, unevenly distributed on more than one hundred municipalities. The Bay of Naples can be divided into four broad homogeneous scenically areas: the Campi Flegrei; that of the city of Naples; the Vesuvius-coastal and the Sorrento peninsula. Since early 2015, the metropolitan area is managed by a separate entity called "Metropolitan City". Among the roles recently attributed to metropolitan city it is also part of the flora and fauna, parks and nature reserves. Is with this incredible reality that we must confront in order to produce a serious and conscious planning of the Gulf of Naples.
