The Institute for Informatics and Telematics (IIT) was founded on 1st March 2002 following the merger of two institutes of the CNR (National Research Council): the Institute of Telematic Applications (IAT) and the Institute of Computational Mathematics (IMC). IIT carries out research activities, enhancement, technological transfer and training in the fields of Information and Communication Technologies and Computational Sciences. Since its establishment IIT has acquired a prominent role in national and international research regarding the Internet through various activities: prestigious scientific publications, scientific organisation and co-ordination of important national and international events, co-ordination of national and international scientific projects and training activities in ICT. These activities are mostly carried out by external means of funding through participation to research projects of the EU, the Ministry of Universities and Research, Region of Tuscany and other public administrative bodies, in addition to important activities with the private sector, mainly represented by Internet Service Providers and Maintainers. In IIT research and applications are integrated in perfect synergy. Basic research results have an invaluable test bed in immediate applications and from these come new ideas for further research activities. This close interaction has enabled the development of Internet services which play a key role in the self-financing of the Institute. Among these services the most important is the registration of domain names under the country code TopLevelDomain .it. IIT has approximately 150 members in its personnel, 50% of whom are CNR employees and others grant-holders, university collaborators and various contracted collaborators.
