Recovery of bioactive compounds from agro-food by-products by membrane-based operations

abstract:
Pressure-driven membrane operations today are well-established technologies in food processing industries. These processes, in relation to their intrinsic properties, have demonstrated to meet the requirements for the recovery, separation, and concentration of bioactive molecules also in the treatment of downstream processing streams of the agro-food production. This chapter provides a comprehensive outlook on the recovery of bioactive compounds from agro-food by-products by membrane-based technologies, in the light of the recent research advancements in this field. Typical applications and sustainable solutions in the treatment of fruit, vegetables, meat, and fish byproducts are presented and discussed.
