abstract:
Sever outbreaks of stunting, yellowing and leaf curl in tunnel-grown tomatoes have occurred in the Autumn 1988, accompanied by heavy infestations of the whitefly Bemisia tabaci. The causa1 agent, tomato yeilow leaf curl geminivirus, was transmitted by grafting and by B. tabaci to tomato seedlings, reproducing field symptoms. The virus was identified on the basis of symptoms, transmission, cytopathology, particle morphology, and molecular hybridition using a cDNA probe. Some tomato samples were also infected by a phloem-restricted virus, with closterovhs-like particles.
