abstract:
In a typical cereal growing area of central Italy, a six-year trial has been conducted with the aim of verifying the long-term sustainability of different agronomic techniques in relation to the management of a Lolium spp. population resistant to ACCase inhibitors. Two types and timings of tillage and two chemical weed control strategies were tested. The impact of each technique and their interactions in terms of herbicide efficacy and final seed bank were analysed. The results show that where there is a high infestation of resistant Lolium spp., agronomic systems without ploughing are unsustainable in the long-term. Integrated weed management (agronomic+chemical) is essential for controlling resistant Lolium spp. and maintaining the crop economically sustainable.
