La latrina occidentale delle terme Centrali di Aquinum

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2019
abstract:
This paper describe the studies carried out on the western latrine of the Central Baths of the ancient Roman city of Aquinum, discovered in the summer of 2012 during the 4th campaign of archaeological investigations. A notable finding was constituted by the numerous marble fragments of sellae pertusae during the excavation of the internal sewer channel. The detailed relief of the individual elements made it possible to assemble the several pieces of the original seats, to reconstruct the fixing system and to plan their restoration and the correct positioning in the room. The main element that characterizes the latrine is the suggestive floor mosaic figured in black and white tesserae (mid-2nd century AD), showing a Nilotic scene with symplegma. All the collected data have been synthesized into a reconstructive proposal of the environment, able to offer a probably reliable vision of the original appearance of the ancient latrine.
