Dc-SQUID readout electronics with infrared remote control

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2002
abstract:
It is well known that electromagnetic interferences (EMI) deteriorate the characteristics of dc SQUIDs as well as any other device based on Josephson junctions. In general a dc-SQUID electronics is made by a head, located near the device, and by a control unit, where the user can adjust the setting parameters of the device. The cables connecting the control unit and the head can be a pathway for EMI, unless careful shielding and filtering are provided. This problem is more serious in directly coupled electronics with respect to readout schemes with a cooled transformer. Here we propose an electronics where the connecting cables have been eliminated and the dparameter settings are made by a common infrared remote control (like those used for household appliances). The remote control unit can fully control the device: it is possible to choose the dc-SQUID bias current, the locking point, the operation mode (open loop or flux locked loop), and the feedback parameters.
