Polymeric membranes for sustainable gas separation

Chapter
Publication Date:
2013
abstract:
This chapter offers an overview to the use of polymeric membranes in gas separation. Basic concepts, mechanisms, manufacturing approaches, materials along with module assembly and applications, with a particular emphasis to CO2 separation, are discussed. A detailed description of the equations that govern the mass transport through dense and porous membranes, along with glassy and rubbery polymeric membranes, below and up the critical temperature and the glass transition temperature, is also given. The chapter deals also with the various membrane fabrication and assembly procedures, yielding indication about the most used module configuration in gas separation.
