Past malaria, demographic parameters and thalassemia in Southern Italy

In this investigation, we have studied the difference of birth and death rates between lowly malarial infested areas of 273 rural villages in Calabria, in order to point out the impact, on the population survival and fertility, of the malaria transmission and of the genetic advantage, that the thalassemia heterozygotes enjoyed in the endemic areas.
