abstract:
Multiple scattering evaluation is one of the most demanding steps in neutron data analysis. Our aim was to achieve real-time estimates for ToF experiments performed on neutron spectrometers with large detection areas. Good estimates of multiple scattering can actually be obtained in times of the order of minutes with standard off-the-shelf computers by means of easily implemented multidimensional integrals of appropriate functions.
Salient features of the present approach are:
ToF single and double scattering intensities calculated by Monte Carlo integration
Careful application of the importance sampling method, but limited to only one of the required MC integrals
Modern programming methods based on row-by-column matrix products in place of nested loops
