Hydrogen production

Chapter
Publication Date:
2018
abstract:
The importance of hydrogen as fuel for transport and power generation is continuously rising. To meet future demands an efficient and sustainable hydrogen production is required. This chapter introduces different technologies for hydrogen production, purification, and separation. The principles of steam reforming, partial and auto thermal oxidation, gasification as well as electrolysis are presented and additional purification pathways, which are needed for the generation of ultra-pure hydrogen for the use in fuel cells, are described. Water gas shift reactors and different sorption technologies, chemical looping and membrane reactors are discussed. Latter provide pure hydrogen from renewable sources with high efficiency and lower technical effort than conventional technologies.
