Lattococcosi: primo caso di infezione oculare in adulto di Seriola dumerilii (Risso, 1810)

Gram positive infections are very important pathologies in aquaculture. Lactococcus garvieae (sin. Enterococcus seriolicida) is the aetiological agent of lactococcosis that arise in juveniles of greater amberjack specimens. In this paper is reported the first episode of pop eye in adult of greater amberjack, Seriola dumerilii. In first days of September 2008 an adult female specimen, of about 18 years old and 35 kg of weight, grown since the 40 g size at the experimental aquaculture plant of IAMC-CNR section of Messina, showed ataxia, lethargy, anorexia, right uni-lateral exophthalmia with severe hemorrhage and whitish exudate. Samples have been taken from damaged eye and spread on agar culture media. The suspected colonies were isolated, and identified by microbiological test and biochemical analysis by API 20 STREP were carried out.
