abstract:
Agriculture is currently facing a dramatic trilemma of producing food, energy and wood for a growing world population, while preserving the environment as well. Agroforestry systems can be able to address those issues integrating on the same land unit crops and/or husbandry with trees, throughout an ecological intensification of productivity and an higher and synergic use efficiency of natural resources and cultural inputs. This objective can be accomplished with the implementation of new modern agroforestry systems, as well with the preservation of traditional systems, currently under strong pressure, but also fundamental for preserving biodiversity and landscape amenity. The Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) has had a tremendous role in discouraging farmers to adopt agroforestry. So far, mostly crop or tree monoculture had been supported by CAP. The new CAP shows some new elements for promoting agroforestry in European agriculture.
