In 2011 the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Italian State represented an occasion for a deeper reflection on the characters and peculiarities of Italian scientific community. This paper intends to analyze what has changed, during the last 150 years, on issues such as social identity of scientists and their relation to the political system, the information and communication of science patterns, the international mobility within and between scientific communities.
