abstract:
In archaeological sites, according to the aims of the National Action Plan, mechanical/physical methods should be preferred when weeds don't grow directly on monuments. In more delicate cases, when weeds grow directly on monuments, or when mechanical/physical methods are not effective, conservation may require the use of herbicides. Such herbicides must be selective for monuments, however today there isn't an available standard. There are few herbicides that can be used, the risk of resistance development is very high. Non-chemical weeding is possible with various techniques, even if those really applicable at an acceptable cost seem to be only weeding with steam and flame weeding. Given the great variability of situations within an archaeological site, at moment it seems that the best strategy is to use multiple methods, choosing the right one at the right time within a framework of integrated weed management.
