abstract:
Hydrological models are important tools for water resources evaluation, land management and cash flows forecasting. When correctly calibrated, they play a decisive role in the prevention of floods and in the management of environmental emergencies. Unfortunately, at present, the accuracy of hydrological models it is often limited by several factors, the most important of which is probably the low reliability and representativeness of the input data. The determination of the influence of rain gauges density and distribution on model's reliability, remain one of the most delicate and controversial issues for hydrological applications. Among the reasons limiting the definition of standard criteria or procedures, geomorphological basin characteristics and meteo-environmental variability play a decisive role. From this point of view, the Magra river basin is particular interesting, both for the intensity of rainfall events and for the torrential character of its waterways, subject to frequent flooding. Taking into consideration weather conditions and operational context occurring in the area during the dramatic event of 24-25 October 2011, the article examines the impact of rain gauges density and distribution on waterflow estimation in different sub-basins of the upper valley of the Magra River.
