abstract:
Worldwide, the global issue, regarding the waste of plastic debris into the sea. is actually a great environmental pro-
blem with serious health effects for mankind. In particular, in the Mediterranean basin, there is a concealed threat
represented by microplastics that, through bioaccumulation processes within the trophic nets of marine ecosystems,
produces high pollutant loadings in some edible species, causing severe risks for human health. Therefore, it is neces-
sary to test new technologies and effective measures to solve this problem as, for instance, the use of bacterial strains
able to decompose all the different kinds of plastic debris soluted into the sea or the laying of floating barriers along
the watercourses to stop the plastic waste carried by fluvial network towards coastal seas. Anyway, the final solution
could be realized, first of all, reducing the production and the use of plastics and taking up polite behaviours to fight
successfully against this new kind of marine pollution.
