Optimization algorithms of GPR data and Geomatics for Cultural Heritage

Capitolo di libro

Abstract:
3D modeling of archaeological and historical structures together with the identification of finds buried with the aim of multimedia diffusion and restoration is the new frontier in the field of conservation science. Often the sites under study have a high level of structural complexity along with complicated territorial geometries. Therefore, the crucial point is both accuracy in the creation of 3D models and the use of sophisticatedalgorithms for Georadar data analysis. This work is to be the first step in a larger project aimed at recovering the ancient villages of the Greek area south of Calabria. The present study focuses on a project to restore a village, Africo (RC), hit in the past by a flood. The survey, starting with the church of St. Nicholas at the centre of the village, was carried out using both the Laser Focus Scanner Focus3D (Faro), whose small size and weight allow for easy portability, both the Riegl LMS-Z420i laser. In parallel, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) analysis were carried out in order to highlight any buried objects. Both in the case of the laser scanner and the Georadar, algorithms developed in their own in the MATLAB environment were also being processed while comparing the results with the returns from the respective proprietary software.
