Ambient Intelligence for Home Medical Treatment Error Prevention

abstract:
This article presents a patient assistance system-based on home sensors, Ambient Intelligence, and Artificial Intelligence-that helps the elderly during their medical treatment at home to reduce medication errors. The patient may have some physical and/or cognitive disabilities.The system consists of a Tutor and a Checker. The Tutor is an intelligent medication reminder that relies on Reinforcement Learning. The Checker, instead, integrates three different intelligent technologies(Deep Neural Network, Optical Character Recognition, and Barcode Reading) to check the adherence to the therapy. The final objective is both to remind effectively when and what medication is to be taken, and check that the patient will take the correct medication.
