The paper focuses on the importance and complexity of the monitoring phase within the Strategic Environmental Assessment of plans and programmes introduced by the 2001/42/EC directive. Monitoring requires a series of activities to be periodically performed, which verify the plan's progress and implementation, evaluate its effects and, if needed, provide indications to modify it, in terms of objectives, actions, implementation instruments.
