The role of cyanobacteria on phytoplankton populations in the coastal waters of the Northern Ionian Sea.

Cyanobacteria have been considered for long time as an inconspicuous component of the marine phytoplankton. The aim of this work was to determine the seasonal composition of phytoplankton communities in a sampling site (Bosco Marziotta - Taranto) of the Northern Ionian Sea and to investigate the cyanobacterial diversity characteristic of this area.
