Abstract:
Electophoretic analysis of 27 karyotypes of V. faba minor has been carried out in order to study the influence of chromosomal changes on seed proteins. The results show that: 1) 28 out of 40 bands are responsible for qualitative differences; 2) chromosomal changes affect the protein profile in a negative direction (reducing the number of bands) but may increase variability by producing new proteins; 3) quantitative differences are evident but not always strong enough to be used for karyotype identification. Cluster analysis of the 40 bands show that: 1) each profile is different from the others; 2) primary karyotype rearrangements are very distinct from each other; from the standard and the other variants; 3) apparently secondary and tertiary rearrangements tend to group according to chromosomal segments involved and to be distinct from the standard.
