Human activity is one of the subject in literature written in French. Sometimes the working activity is a theme, other times it gives the décor. Amin Maalouf illustrates merchants' habits in his novel Le périple de Baldassarre. He recognizes in them dignity which is at the origin of contemporary relationships among Mediterranean countries.
