NMR Study of room temperature ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate

NMR methods based on nuclear Overhauser enhancement (NOE) are applied to the investigation of the structure of the room temperature ionic liquid l-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium+ BF4- The system is investigated with and without trace of water. The experimental results provide information on cation-cation, cation-anion. water-cation and water-anion interactions. The results point out the role of non-covalent C-H...0 and C-H...F interactions.
