Using femtosecond pump and probe spectroscopy and ab-initio calculations, we show that upon photoexcitation of dimers of tetramethyl-tetrathiafulvalene cations, excess vibronic energy is deposited predominantly into coherent phonons that lead to photoinduced phase transitions in linear chains of these materials.
