The Calibration of Cylindrical Rem Meters in Highly Scattering Environments

Academic Article
Publication Date:
1987
abstract:
Experiments have been carried out to calibrate cylindrical neutron-sensitive devices in a highly scattering environment in order to establish the characteristics and the limits of employment of different calibration techniques. In these experiments three commercially available cylindrical rem meters were calibrated with the De Pangher model and the shadow cone technique. The effective radii of the detectors were estimated by the De Pangher model. The discrepancies between the methods were determined. The results showed that, provided an uncertainty of 5-10% is tolerable, the wall scattering coefficient and the effective radius derived by the De Pangher model can be used to calibrate other instruments of the same type.
