I due volti di Fritz Haber: benefattore dell'umanità o criminale di guerra?

Chapter
Publication Date:
2016
abstract:
Fritz Haber, Chemistry Nobel prize 1918, is a complex character, a typical example of the dilemma of every scientist that in wartime war has to choose between the loyalty to his Country and the ethic of research. He has been one of the few scientists able to switch easily from university laboratories to industrial plants and to battlefields. During First World War he was totally involved in the conflict, believing that, if in peacetime a scientist should devote all his efforts to the well-being of the mankind, in wartime his science is due first to his homeland. Therefore the same scientist who, with the synthesis of ammonia, fed millions of people, is also considered father of the chemical warfare and a war criminal.
