abstract:
This article investigates some fundamental trends of our time from a perspec- tive inspired by Paul Virilio's «dromology». Described as the «science» or «lo- gic» of «speed», «dromology» aims to account for how the accelerated changes induced by the globalization of the dominance of technology affect our perception of space-time. Virilio's analysis investigates the effects produced by the telematics re- volution to which he attributes the power to accelerate communications but only at the cost of inhibiting our capacity for representation. The author inscribes these out- comes within the framework of major contemporary catastrophes. In a context in which computerization is about to infiltrate every practice of life, critical confron- tation with «dromology» is proposed here as an inescapable step. An opportunity to reflect more deeply on the use (or misuse) of info-technologies, but also to let, by contrast, an alternative thesis to the techno-pessimistic one of catastrophes, emerge.
