TEMPERATURE SURFACE TRANSITIONS IN NEMATIC LIQUID-CRYSTALS - ELASTIC MODEL

abstract:
Temperature surface transitions have been observed in nearly homeotropic samples of nematic liquid crystal. The temperature dependence of the nematic orientation may be described by means of the elastic model recently proposed. From the best fit of the experimental data it is possible to estimate the effective splay-bend elastic constant for the considered nematic liquid crystal.
