The paper deals with the basic concepts used to describe the contamination level of a generic hydraulic fluid used in the fluid power systems. After having briefly defined the contamination in itself and outlined the usual classification of the fluid contaminants and their functional effects, the dimensional classes according to the ISO Standards are discussed with a special emphasis on the most recent changes and their impact in the technical communication.
