Catania Archeologia e città. Il Progetto OpenCity. Banca Dati, GIS e WebGIS

OPENCiTy is a multidisciplinary research project on the city of Catania directed by the Institute for Archaeological and Monumental heritage of the National Research Council. The main aim is to create a tool capable of increasing the collective knowledge of Catania through the free sharing of data resulting from the historical and topographical research conducted in the urban area that has been carried out over the centuries, in order to promote a better planning of land-use and territorial protection. The results will be published in a volume, which will be the first of a monograph series designed to disseminate the results or the project in order to deepen our knowledge of every aspect of the history and culture of Catania. The volume wishes to give an overview of the urban archaeological investigation, highlighting the role of the research done "in the city and for the city". Moreover, it analyses the characteristics and methodological choices made in the creation of the database, the GIS platform and WebGIS, the three elements, which will combine to store, manage and make freely accessible the data on the complex urban stratification of the city of Catania.
