In the Green Paper on agricultural products quality (2008), the European Commission describes traditional products as «products which offer the consumer something over and above baseline requirements». This approach does not take into account the conflict between traditional methods of production and food safety rules, which characterized in legal perspective the category of traditional products. It is difficult to anticipate what will be the extension of protection of the offer of traditional products, because, at one side, the current legal framework which enables to protect traditional products whose specificity is connected to the geographical origin (PDO and PGI) is subject to modifications, and at the other side, the framework that presently aims to protect traditional names (TSG) has not been successful and the European Commission proposes to abolish it.
