Trajectory prediction of a self propelled hull by unsteady RANS computations

Conference Paper
Publication Date:
2008
abstract:
The turning circle manoeuvre of a self-propelled Very Large Crude Carrier (VLCC) induced by a rotation of the rudder is numerically simulated through them integration of the Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations coupled with the equations of the motion of a rigid body. To this purpose, the unsteady RANS solver developed at INSEAN will be used. In order to reduce the computational effort and because of the relatively low Froude number, the free-surface will be kept fixed in its undisturbed configuration and modelled as a symmetry plane; moreover, the propeller will be simulated through a non-interactive actuator disk. The main parameters of the manoeuvre will be compared to the experimental data produced for the SIMMAN 2008 Workshop (www.simman2008.dk) and the flow field will be analyzed.
