Phainomena contra Nooumena: Sextus Empiricus, the Notion of Place and the Pyrrhonian Strategy at Work
Capitolo di libro
Data di Pubblicazione:

Abstract:
While analyzing the prickly question of any alleged and dogmatically
established notion of space (*topos*), as it is presented and discussed by
Sextus Empiricus especially in his *Outlines of Pyrrhonism* (=*PH* I
119-135), this paper will consider from the beginning his entire critical
attack as a clear case-study of a more general polemical attitude and at
the same time of his genuine, more 'parochial' Pyrrhonian point of view.
Accordingly, the main lines of the following analysis will try to highlight
both the general 'doxographical' trustworthiness of Sextus's reconstruction
(along with the most relevant features of his specific dialectical
strategy) and his final approach toward a possible and coherent sceptical
outlook (along with its ethical consequences).
