The presence of high fecal contamination levels (CFU>104/100 ml on m-FC agar) was detected in some areas of the Messina coast affected by the sewage discharge. Counts performed on m-FC agar were higher than those obtained on MUG agar, specific for Escherichia coli; no statistical differences, however, were found between the two media (t=0.71, n=48)
