"Napoli" nella Enciclopedia bruniana

Academic Article
Publication Date:
2017
abstract:
Naples, the city of Bruno's youth, represents a crucial phase in terms of both early philosophical and literary formation, and his difficult religious (and theological) experience. The disciplinary proceedings to which he was subject during his time in the convent ended with the threat of a more serious trial, while warnings and condemnations characterized the years that followed. The capital of the Vice-Kingdom serves as the backdrop for his comedy Candelaio, as for Bruno it aptly represented the ephemeral reality of the existence of individual souls as described by Plotinus. Although Bruno never returned to Naples after his departure in early 1576, the city remained a part of his identity and a metaphor of existence: Naples, the city of opposites, represents the 'Nolan philosophy'.
